More info

Mitre: It is the headgear divided into two peaks worn by the Bishop during solemn worship. At first it was conical and only later divided to form two points. In addition to Bishops, it was allowed for Cardinals and sometimes Abbots. The two hanging ribbons were added in XII century. The mitre is white but may be decorated with embroidery and gems, with gold cloth or left unadorned depending on the rite or function for which it is worn. It is the symbol of holy authority, of the fullness of priesthood and of the mission to bless and sanctify.
